Rodman Una Smith
Rodman Una Smith of Quiogue died at his home on April 14. He was 87.
Born in Brooklyn on February 27, 1925, Mr. Smith was the first of two sons of James Theodore and Grace Una Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Great Neck High School in 1943. He was a talented ice skater and performed professionally in Sonja Henie’s 1942-43 “Stars on Ice” at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 2, 1943, and achieved the rank of corporal, 513 Bomb Squad, 376 Bomb Group. Mr. Smith’s specialty was airplane armorer during World War II and he earned a Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged on February 28, 1946. He then went on to earn his associate’s degree in business from Adelphi University in 1948.
Mr. Smith was employed for 36 years at the New York Life Insurance Company, serving as group vice president, prior to retiring.
A devoted father and husband, Mr. Smith enjoyed the beach and boating on the East End, according to survivors.
Mr. Smith is survived by a son, William Galbraith Smith of Riverhead; a daughter, Brooke Smith DiCapua and her husband Lawrence of Quiogue; two grandsons, Henry and Blake DiCapua, also of Quiogue; and his brother, William Scott Smith of Westhampton.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Joyce Galbraith Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, at 11:15 a.m., at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Main Street in Westhampton Beach.
