William Culver Of Southampton Dies March 9

William White Culver of Southampton died at his home on March 9. He was 95 and a member of the Southampton Fire Department for 59 years.

Mr. Culver was born on May 1, 1920, in Southampton to Jane White and J. Harold Culver. He graduated from Southampton High Schooland served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1947 he married Dorothy “Ebby” Brennan of Bridgehampton.

Mr. Culver spent his life in construction and in l971, along with his two sons, started their own construction business. During his long life he enjoyed duck hunting, fishing on his boat, surfcasting the ocean for striped bass and bluefish and playing golf at the Southampton Golf Club with his buddies until he was in his 90s.

He joined the Southampton Fire Department on April 1, 1957, and remained a dedicated active member in the Hook and Ladder Company until he died. Mr. Culver was the head driver of the ladder truck for 25 years until he stepped down at the age of 80. He was honored as Fireman of the Year several times from his Company and the Department. He was liked and admired by all firemen who served with him, survivors said.

Mr. Culver is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ebby; two sons, Bill and wife Pamela, and Peter and wife Carmel; four grandchildren, Kristy Culver Howelland husband Ed, Kathleen White Culver, PJ and Travis Culver; and four great-grandchildren, Kyla Culver and Sienna, Brennan and Halle Howell; and many friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Sally Dunwell.

A funeral Mass was held at the Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and

Mary, followed by burial at the church cemetery with military and fire

departments honors. Arrangements were under the direction of the J.M. O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.

Southampton DWI Arrests for the Week of April 25

Michael Martin, 58, of Montclair, New Jersey, was arrested by Southampton Town Police on April 22 at 1:02 a.m. on Old Riverhead Road in Northampton and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor.
