William F. Hills died on July 25, 2018, of prostate cancer. He was 97.
Known as “Bill,” Mr. Hills held several jobs during his lifetime, notably working for the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) in the 1950s and 1960s and later for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1986.
Mr. Hills served five years in the U.S. Army, notably enduring the battles of Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and in the Asian Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a distinguished member of the Disabled American Vets and the American Legion and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus.
He loved volunteering at the Boutique at Concern for Independent Living, Liberty Village in Amityville, where he resided. He was a strong leader who enjoyed talking about his large family and was always there to talk with and help other veterans.
Mr. Hills was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Margaret, in 2003. He is survived by his four daughters, Margaret Ann Nichols, Patricia J. Robeck, Mary C. Gesell, and Florence E. Hills; and a son, William H. Hills; 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his youngest child, Frank Hills in 2013.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 2, at the Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. Burial is set for Friday, August 3, at Calverton National Cemetery.
