We don’t often get to write about a property in the North Sea/Noyac section of the Town of Southampton, but 147 Edgemere Drive is a special case. The house was sold by the widow of Joe Sherman, who died on St. Patrick’s Day last year at 91. Music aficionados might know him as a composer of several classic songs, including one of Nat King Cole’s most enduring hits.

First, though, a few details about the house, which was purchased by Dilip Patel and Sarbjit Dhillon for $3,495,000. It is 3,500 square feet, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. The custom modern home has incredible views of Noyac Bay and a south-side pond from every room and a large sandy beach tucked away on a full acre. There are soaring ceilings with a huge living room, open layout, large gourmet kitchen, and media room.

Joe Sherman initially wrote songs with his brother Noel Sherman, but his brother died at only 42 years of age. Among Sherman compositions are “To the Ends of the Earth” and “Eso Beso,” which were both hits for Paul Anka, and “Juke Box Baby” sung by Perry Como and “Graduation Day” for the Four Freshmen. Joe Sherman also worked with Tony Bennett and Ethel Merman, and for a time in the 1960s he was the head A&R man at Epic Records. He also worked on film and television scores, wrote jingles for commercials, and conducted orchestras in recording sessions.

But what are probably Mr. Sherman’s biggest hits were songs written for Nat King Cole—“That Sunday, That Summer” and especially “Ramblin’ Rose.” The latter was released via Capitol Records in 1962 and shot to No. 2 on the Billboard chart. The single sold more than 1 million copies. It was the title song of Cole’s next album, which also sold more than a million copies. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Record of the Year category. The song was also recorded by Louis Armstrong, Bobby Vinton, Petula Clark, Dean Martin and Marvin Gaye, among other well-known warblers.

As a footnote: After Mr. Sherman died last year, his widow, Susan, donated his white C. Bechstein upright piano to the Bridgehampton School, where it can be found in the music room.
