When you look at as many listing photos as we do, you start to see more than just houses and rooms. You start seeing details, like odd furniture or out of place artwork. It’s like cracking a code once you become aware of it, and it’s become one of our favorite things to do now. Check out some of the fun, quirky, and out of place items we found in listing properties recently.

Telling Time In Sag Harbor

At first blush, this room appears to be a simple gathering space, a place to watch the ole television perhaps. But there is one thing that appears to be out of scale with everything else. Is it us, or is that clock just a BIT over-sized for this room? It’s like half the length of the window and looms over that itty, bitty lamp. Just imagine how loud its ticking is! We’ll give this Alice-in-Wonderland-y room the benefit of the doubt and chock some of it up to the angle at which the photo was taken. But if we were living there, this clock would be the first thing taken down … for fear of being driven mad by its aggressive time telling.

European Flair In Water Mill

We like it when houses have a dash of European flair in the design, but only when it’s done with a light touch. Not with a sledgehammer. These half-animal, half-human statues flanking both sides of this small entrance fall into the latter category. They are a tad, shall we say, grandiose for this weathered, shingled abode. They belong somewhere else, where there is, frankly, more space and a larger door, or at the very least, a larger front porch. Also, not for nothing, but they’re not exactly the most comforting statues ever. OK, you got us, we don’t like them. There, we said it. Happy now?

Embracing ’Murica In Southampton

Well, here is a nice slice of ’Murica, and right over the bed no less. To be clear, we’re not opposed to getting outside and communing with nature, as it were, but do we need a fishing rod crossed over a shotgun hanging over our heads while we sleep? Nope, nope we do not. Hanging in another room that isn’t where we sleep? Maybe. Tucked away in a closet? Even better. There is a time and a place to show off these things, and that is outdoors, in nature, and away from our beds.

Zombies In Bridgehampton

Look at this elegant bathroom, with its dramatic chandelier, glass tables, white faux-fur chairs, and, wait, is that a picture of a green zombie skull on the back wall?! Why yes, yes it is. And we heart it big time! In a bathroom dripping with luxury (and self-importance), clearly designed for all things pampering, hangs this badass zombie skull. We hope there’s greater meaning here, like “Don’t take yourself so seriously!” At least, that’s what we’re taking from it. We’re also considering getting one for our own, much smaller bathroom.

Feeling Groovy In Sagaponack

Um, subtle, guys. Hanging right over the bed is this blue, neon sign, promoting, well, good times. We support that, although for anyone who freezes under pressure, it could backfire. This sign brings with it a great deal of expectation. Just sayin’. We kind of like how it’s both subtle—to the point where we almost didn’t see it—and pretty damn obvious … once we actually used our eyes. All in all, we’re fans, in that it’s-not-our-cup-of-tea-but-more-power-to-you kind of way.

Tips for Avoiding Rental Scams

Rental scams are pervasive, targeting both those seeking permanent housing and those seeking a quick getaway or seasonal lease. To help prospective tenants avoid falling prey to scams, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is calling attention to common rental scams.
