The Madoo Conservancy will present “Stephen Scanniello: The Rose Whisperer” for the seventh annual Madoo in Manhattan Robert Dash Garden Design Lecture on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. at a private club in Manhattan with a reception to follow.

Rosarian, author, lecturer and gardener Stephen Scanniello is the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden curator for the New York Botanical Garden and the rosarian for Elizabeth Park, the nation’s oldest public rose garden located in West Hartford, Connecticut. He is a judge for the rose trials of Bagatelle in Paris since 1986 and the president of the Heritage Rose Foundation.

Mr. Scanniello has worked throughout his career to preserve heritage roses and in 2009 created the Heritage Rose District, a volunteer project that promotes heritage roses and gardening with the children of Harlem. Among the honors and awards that Mr. Scanniello has received are the Great Rosarian of the World Award in 2009, the 2013 Jane Righter Rose Medal from the Garden Club of America, and the American Horticultural Society’s annual Book Award in 1998 for “A Year of Roses,” one of five books that he has authored or co-authored. He was honored alongside Julie Andrews by the New York Botanical Garden in 2015, and by Bette Midler and her New York Restoration Project in 2019 for his ongoing work in rose preservation and education.

Madoo is a horticulturally diverse public garden in Sagaponack with historic structures established in 1967 by artist, gardener and writer Robert Dash.

Tickets to “Stephen Scanniello: The Rose Whisperer” in Manhattan are $125, or $100 for Madoo members, available at madoo.org.
