Horticulturist and storyteller Abra Lee of Conquer the Soil is the next speaker in the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons lecture series, appearing on Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Bridgehampton Community House.
Lee is the author of the forthcoming book “Conquer the Soil: Black America and the Untold Stories of Our Country’s Gardeners, Farmers, and Growers.” Lee will take guests on a journey through American history, celebrating plant people and their achievements, from the first Black florist west of the Mississippi, to a multihyphenate entomological artist extraordinaire, and academics who have led the way shaping future generations of horticulturists.
Lee has been a municipal arborist and airport landscape manager and has contributed to The New York Times, Fine Gardening and Veranda magazines. She is a graduate of Auburn University College of Agriculture and an alumna of the Longwood Gardens Society of Fellows, a global network of public horticulture professionals. Her current role is director of horticulture at Oakland Cemetery, a Victorian garden cemetery and park in downtown Atlanta.
Admission to the lecture is $10, or free for HAH members. The Bridgehampton Community House is located at 2357 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton. Visit hahgarden.org for more information.
