A historic former manse to Sag Harbor’s iconic Old Whalers’ Church has hit the market.

The home at 12 Suffolk Street on a 0.29-acre lot in the heart of the village dates back to 1765, when the walls were constructed from ship ballast.

Minard Lafever, who also designed the 1844 Old Whalers’ Church, designed an addition to the house in the mid-1800s. The addition matches the style of the Egyptian Revival church and its whaling motif, which has been carefully preserved, according to the listing.

In 2012, the four-bedroom residence was modernized, but in keeping with its history.

The grand 50-foot hallway features brick, Venetian plaster, dentil molding, and the original wide plant pumpkin pine floors.

The living room and dining room, each with its own fireplace, flank the entry and enjoy natural light from tall windows that open to the front porch. Continuing down the hallway, there is a spacious eat-in kitchen with a bay window breakfast nook, island seating, and custom cabinetry by Dereyk Patterson, crowned by a La Cornue Chateau range. The open kitchen flows into a sitting room with a fireplace.

A second sitting room has French doors that open to a rear dining deck that overlook the 30-foot heated gunite lap pool and outdoor shower. Mature hedges and landscaping screen the pool area for privacy.

Rounding out the main level are an en-suite guest bedroom and powder room.

On the second story, the master suite has walk-in closets and a Moroccan tile bath with a dual vanity, a free standing tub, and a shower. On that floor, also find an office and two en-suite bedrooms.

The partially finished lower level has a sitting room with the original kitchen’s oven, a full bath, a laundry room, and a wine room.

Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing for 12 Suffolk Street, with an asking price of $5.3 million.
