October promises to be an exciting month at Southampton Arts Center (SAC). In addition to the opening of the fall exhibition, “A Celebration of Trees,” which opens October 1, SAC will offer new programming complementing the exhibition, including films, talks and studio classes. October will also see the return of Silent Disco with a Halloween theme, Hamptons International Film Fest, and new studio workshops for adults and children. Here’s what’s on deck in October…

Art: “A Celebration of Trees” Exhibition Opening — Saturday, October 1, at 6 p.m.

Curated by Laurie Dolphin, Daniela Kronemeyer, and Coco Myers, this is an ecological multi-media art exhibition created to educate and expand thought and consciousness about the world’s vast network of trees — a critical resource to humanity’s survival. The opening will feature music by Tom Wall and a toast to the artists.

Eco: Tree Tour of Folly Tree Arboretum – Sunday, October 2, at 10 a.m.

Tucker Marder will lead a tour of the Folly Tree Arboretum in East Hampton. This cultural archive of trees is dedicated to environmental storytelling. Founded in 2013, the Folly Tree Arboretum works to promote an exuberant environmental ethic through art and science. Trees in the collection include a sycamore that went to the moon on Apollo 14 and an oak tree that owns itself. Folly Tree Arboretum produces projects that explore the ways in which culture, narrative and imagination influence humans’ relationship to the natural world as well as supports the work of others who are developing novel forms of environmental storytelling.

Talk: Curator-led Exhibition Tour – Sunday, October 2, at Noon

“A Celebration of Trees” curators will lead a tour of the galleries with artists Frank Relle, Camilla Webster and others.

Studio: ArtSEA: Create + Sip Night With Cornell Cooperative Extension – Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m.

Cornell Cooperative Extension ArtSEA night out at SAC. ArtSEA Create + Sip events allow guests to learn about local species and habitats while creating marine-themed art. Proceeds support CCE Marine’s work.

Studio @ SAC: Figure Drawing Workshop – Fridays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 1 p.m.

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required.

Wellness: Sound Meditation – Saturday, October 8 and 22, at 10:30 a.m.

Soothing, deeply relaxing and immersive sound meditation led by bowl master and meditation DJ Daniel Lauter.

Film: Hamptons International Film Festival – Saturday, October 8, at 11 a.m.

As part of Hamptons International Film Festival, SAC will be screening “Broker,” “The Fire That Took Her,” “The Cave of Adullam” and “Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues.”

Film: Hamptons International Film Festival – Sunday, October 9, at 11:30 a.m.

As part of Hamptons International Film Festival, SAC will be screening “In Her Hands,” “Karaoke,” “The Swimmers” and “Who Invited Charlie?”

Kids: Children’s Tree Bookmaking Workshop – Saturday, October 15, at 3 p.m.

Artist Megan Chaskey will lead a special workshop where children will create their own handmade books of stories and poems celebrating trees. They will use eco and tree-friendly paper made from abaca, flax, hemp, cotton or bamboo fibers.

Wellness: Guided Tree Meditation – Sunday, October 16, at 3 p.m.

Artist Megan Chaskey will lead a meditative journey exploring our magical connection with trees. Participants will connect with the amazing trees on the grounds of SAC and tap into the wisdom each one has to share. Includes anointing with a tree essential oil.

Eco: Native Plant and Tree Tour With Shane Weeks – Saturday, October 22, at Noon

Join Shane Weeks on a nature hike at the Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Refuge as he speaks on native plants and their traditional uses for the Indigenous peoples of Long Island.

Studio: Tree Painting Workshop – Saturday, October 22, at 3 p.m.

“A Celebration of Trees” exhibition artist Barbara Thomas will lead a workshop on how to paint trees. Participants will take a look outside, observing the structures of trees, then make some sketch drawings, and a final painting, depicting trees, with some fall color.

Live: Halloween Silent Disco – Friday, October 28, at 7 p.m.

Come dance under the full moon at this outrageously fun (and quiet) rave featuring DJ’s and multiple music genres. Quiet Events provides their three-channel LED-style headphones allowing guests to change channels to different types of music. Headphones light up with colors assigned to each channel so dancers can see what others are listening to based on the color of their headphones. At any given moment you might find a group of friends dancing to three different styles of music, which makes this event entertaining not only for the participants, but for onlookers as well. Costumes required for this fun Halloween-themed dance party. SAC will have a contest on the best costumes, so get creative.

SAC’s galleries are open Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Southampton Arts Center is at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. To register for programs or for more information, visit southamptonartscenter.org or call 631-283-0967.
