When real-life Broadway couple Kelli Barrett and Jarrod Spector sat down to individually write the experience of how they first met for their wedding website three years ago, they realized that they each had very different insights about the initial moments. While they both agreed they met after being cast as a married couple in a reading of a musical, Ms. Barrett viewed her now-husband more as a friend while Mr. Spector had “stars in his eyes” from the beginning.
Looking back on that revelation, the actors—who have starred in productions like “Doctor Zhivago” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”—realized that there was potential to bring their story to the stage. From there, the two went on to create their latest concert titled “Look at It My Way,” which will be presented at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor on July 17 as part of the theater’s Music Mondays series.
“That’s the idea of the show—that you don’t really have an accurate picture of yourself until you see yourself through your partner’s eyes,” said Ms. Barrett, who returns to Bay Street after starring as Eliza in the theater’s acclaimed production of “My Fair Lady” last summer.
“We tell the story of our relationship from the first time we met to today from two completely different perspectives.”
Musically, the concert includes everything from a mashup of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk” and Prince’s “Kiss” to a medley of ‘80s power ballads.
However, the show also contains a clear narrative with plenty of endearing anecdotes, making it more similar to a jukebox musical than a traditional concert, the couple said.
And as a way to tie everything together, they use one of their favorite films—“When Harry Met Sally”—to explain their relationship.
“[The film] is sort of a launching pad of how to tell the story,” Mr. Spector said. “We sort of fancy ourselves as the musical version.”
One particular memory directly mirrors the scene in which Sally orders pie in painstaking detail.
“That was how Kelli ordered her salad the first time [we] went out to lunch—this incredible monologue to the [waiter] who became cross-eyed by the end of it,” Mr. Spector recollected. “Which I thought was lovely, adorable and charming and also a little scary all at the same time.”
This is not the first time the couple has dabbled in exploring the idea of musical marriages. When they were first married they created a concert called “This Is Dedicated: Music’s Greatest Marriages” in which they examined how couples like Sonny and Cher, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Jay-Z and Beyoncé and more kept the music playing.
“We had so much fun doing it and it ended up being a pretty great success,” Ms. Barrett said. “We were able to travel it all over the country so we said, ‘Let’s write a new one.’ We just wanted to keep stretching ourselves.”
Although “Look at It My Way” premiered at Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York City in April, the couple said they are excited to perform it on a bigger stage like Bay Street’s. And just like with “This Is Dedicated,” they plan on sharing their journey with audiences around the country and beyond.
“We think [it’s] an important thing to share with an audience so they can take that back to their own relationships,” Ms. Barrett said.
Tickets to the Monday, July 17, 8 p.m. concert range from $45 to $85. Call 631-725-9500 or visit baystreet.org.
