Edward Jack Erwin of East Quogue died at home on Monday, November 3. He was 79.
Born in East Quogue to Patrick A. Erwin Sr. and Esta Downs, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a retired watch engineer for the Suffolk County Department of Public Works in Riverhead.
A member of the East Quogue Fire Department for more than 50 years, he served as its chief in 1963 and 1964, and was a commissioner with the department for 25 years. He was the president of the Sunrise Association in 1963 and 1964, and the president of the Southampton, East Hampton and Shelter Island Town Chiefs Association in 1965 and 1966.
Mr. Erwin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marion Elizabeth (née Sinclair) Erwin; three daughters, Linda J. Cardone and her husband Ben of East Quogue, Susan E. Erwin of Nanuet, New York, and Nancy E. Erwin and her partner Al Eckstein of Wellington, Florida; and two sons, Gary T. Erwin and his wife Wendy of Westhampton Beach, and Johnathon O. Erwin and his wife Faith of East Quogue.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kevin and Gary Cardone, Kelsey and Patrick Erwin, Alex and Sami Gumas and Zachary and Jacklyn Eckstein; and one great-grandchild, Ian Edward Cardone.
He was predeceased by a sister, Nora Foster; and three brothers, Patrick J. Erwin Jr., Thomas F. Erwin and Joseph Erwin.
A wake was held on November 6 at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays, where members of the East Quogue Fire Department held firematic services. A funeral service was held at the funeral home on November 7; interment with military honors followed at Oakwood Cemetery in East Quogue.
