John Chesterfield Bowe
John Chesterfield “Chet” Bowe of East Hampton died at Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson on February 28. He was 64.
Born October 4, 1946, to Maggie and Lee Ernest Bowe in North Carolina, he was educated at P.W. Moore School and later received his General Equivalency Diploma. On September 3, 1977, he married the former Daisy Giles.
Mr. Bowe believed in hard work and very often held more than one job to provide for his family. He retired from Agway in 2009 after 30 years of employment. He also worked many years as a chauffeur for Sag Harbor Car Service and Dependable Taxi Service and often did private runs. He also owned and operated Bowe’s Lawn Service for 33 years.
Mr. Bowe joined the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton under the leadership of Reverend Henry Faison Jr. After many years of training as a trustee, he was selected to be the church’s treasurer. He took his role as trustee and treasurer very seriously and served faithfully on the board of trustees for 22 years.
Mr. Bowe was an avid sports fan and rooted adamantly for the Yankees. One of his most meaningful duties as a father was to enthusiastically support his three sons in their athletic pursuits. He was known to have a very quiet spirit but could always evoke laughter from those whom were in his presence, survivors said.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy; mother, Maggie Bowe of North Carolina; children, Troy Bowe and his wife Fannie of Bellport, Jonathan Bowe and his wife Britney of Georgia, and Jarred Bowe of East Hampton; five grandchildren, Troy and Amber Bowe, Bryanna and Gianna Bowe, and Mikayla Bowe; three sisters, Eleanor Brown, Marcia James and Joyce Johnson Spence; two brothers, Willis Liverman and Allen Liverman; an uncle, Allen Lister; two sisters-in-law, Helen D. Giles and Ellen Giles; a brother-in-law, Rev. Carleton J. Giles and his wife Stephany; three godchildren, Felicia Crutch Melton, Maya Parker, and Jerome Walker; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Vernice Poole; and a brother, John Thomas Bowe.
Visitation was held on Friday, March 4, at the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton. A funeral Mass was held at the church on Saturday, March 5, and Rev. Carlton Giles, Mr. Bowe’s brother-in-law, delivered the eulogy. Interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
