Slow Food East End will honor Susan and Myron Levine and celebrate the Long Island cheese pumpkin on Sunday, October 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 18 Bay Restaurant on Shelter Island.
Slow Food East End is the local chapter of the national nonprofit Slow Food USA, which promotes the preservation of regional food cultures and traditions. Its Fall Market Dinner will include a cocktail reception followed by a four-course meal featuring dishes that incorporate the Long Island cheese pumpkin, a local variety of moschata squash.
The Long Island Regional Seed Consortium launched The Long Island Cheese Pumpkin Project earlier this year in an effort to raise awareness of the variety and turn around its decline in popularity and availability since the 1970s. It is listed among 200 foods in Slow Food USA’s “Ark of Taste,” a catalog of distinctive foods facing extinction.
For their support of charitable programs that promote good farming practices and a sustainable environment, the Levines will receive Slow Food East End’s second Carlo Petrini Award, named for the founder of the international Slow Food movement.
The deadline for Fall Market Dinner reservations is Monday, October 17. The cost is $110 for the public, or $95 for members, inclusive of food, taxes, gratuities and a $10 donation to Slow Food East End. Reservations may be made at slowfoodeastend.org.
Wellness Foundation team member Maude Muto, the owner and chef at Hampton Herbivore, will demonstrate how to make a plant-based dessert on Wednesday, October 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton.
A variety of heart-healthy plant-based whole foods will be served during the potluck event. Each guest is asked to bring a dish to share, including copies of the recipe. Dishes and recipes should not include any animal products. Each guest should also bring utensils and a plate.
The suggested donation to attend is $10 to benefit Wellness Foundation’s W Kids Program and the South Fork Natural History Museum. For more information, contact info@wfeh.org or 631 329-2590, or visit wfeh.org.
