Mary Barry Welsh of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on July 9. She was 97
Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on October 16, 1915, to the former Mary Graham and James Barry, she lost her mother in the 1918 flu epidemic. When her father remarried, survivors said, he was prescient enough to move the family back to Ireland in early October 1929. Ms. Welsh attended the Presentation School in Tralee and, after graduation, returned to the United States.
She met her husband, Oliver “Red” Welsh, in New York and they married in 1942 at St. Sebastian’s Church in Woodside, Queens. They had two daughters, Maribeth and Ellen, and raised their family first in Brooklyn and later moved to Seaford.
Ms. Welsh worked for 25 years in insurance with Gundermann & Gundermann in Huntington. She retired to Southampton in 1985 and became active in the community, volunteering at Southampton Hospital for 20 years and for the Dominican Sisters. She had also been president of the local AARP chapter.
According to survivors, she was very much a lady from a bygone era with wonderful taste, wit and fortitude.
Ms. Welsh was predeceased by her husband and brother. She is survived by daughters, Maribeth and Ellen of New York and Southampton; a niece, Peggy Welsh Bousson; grandnieces Katherine and Elizabeth Bousson, all of Southampton; and many nieces and nephews from the Welsh and Barry families.
A private funeral Mass was observed on Thursday, July 11, at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A memorial Mass is planned at Sacred Hearts on October 19 at 11 a.m.
