Running Again

My name is Patrick Gunn and I am running for Southampton Town justice. I ran last year and, although unsuccessful, I am proud of my effort and how my opponent and I conducted mutually respectful campaigns in keeping with the dignity of our profession and the position we were seeking. I congratulate my opponent, the Honorable Karen Sartain, who continues to be an excellent justice for the Town of Southampton.

It’s not an easy decision to put yourself out there and run for public office. I believe every candidate brings something unique to the table and deserves respect for their participation in our democratic process.

My campaign will focus solely on my qualifications and once again will not engage in negativity or criticism of other candidates. As any job applicant, I ask that you consider my credentials and experience as they relate to the job I am applying for.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, I returned to Long Island, settling in Hampton Bays, where my wife, Jennifer, and I have lived for 28 years and have raised our two children. We both worked, attended, and graduated from Southampton College (Long Island University), making lifetime friends and falling in love with the Town of Southampton.

I went on to obtain an MBA from C.W. Post while working as an adjunct professor at Southampton College and attending Touro Law in the evening. I am also a proud member of the American Legion and VFW.

After the closing of our beloved Southampton College, I began my legal career as a Suffolk County assistant district attorney, working in the Southampton and East Hampton town justice courts, gaining criminal case management and trial experience. I went on to serve in the appeals, major crime and narcotics bureaus of the Suffolk County district attorney’s office, acquiring investigative and felony trial experience.

I subsequently worked as an assistant town attorney and public safety division administrator in East Hampton, gaining valuable insight into budget management, town code prosecution and zoning/land use matters.

Now in private practice, I handle every type of case heard at the Southampton Town Justice Court and continue to prosecute part time for the Village of Quogue. I am a courtroom lawyer — I know the law, I understand court functions, processes and outcomes, and can hit the ground running if elected. I have also been rated “Qualified” by the Suffolk County Bar Association.

I thank the leadership and committees of the Southampton Republican and Conservative parties who generously nominated and support me. Again, best wishes to all the candidates and their families, and whatever the outcome, thank you for considering me, and God bless Southampton Town.

Patrick Gunn
