Bridgehampton native and longtime Water Mill resident Ruth Pulver Enstine died on September 21 at Preston Health Center at the Cypress on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. She was 85
Born December 29, 1922, to Katherine Rogers Pulver and Clarence W. Pulver, she graduated from Bridgehampton School among the top of her class and later graduated summa cum laude from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. A writer with published articles in Reader’s Digest, she married Raymond Enstine and settled in Water Mill, where she became a homemaker, raising two children.
She was very active in community volunteer activities, including service as a leader for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. An active member of the Water Mill Community Club and the Cotillion Club in Southampton, she also volunteered for the Water Mill Museum and Southampton Hospital and was a judge for the Parrish Museum’s speaking contest at Southampton High School.
Active in athletics, she played basketball in high school, and continued her interest in athletics as a golfer: She was a member of the Southampton Golf Club Women’s Association and the Bear Creek Golf Club Women’s Association on Hilton Head in South Carolina. An avid reader, she enjoyed gardening and doing crossword puzzles.
In addition to her husband, Raymond Enstine of South Carolina, she is survived by a daughter, Cathy E. Lawrenz of Saratoga Springs; a son Raymond Enstine Jr. and his wife Wendy of Southampton and South Carolina; and a grandson, Scott Enstine of Shelter Island.
Visitation was held on September 30 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Funeral services, also at Brockett, were held on October 1, followed by graveside services at Southampton Cemetery. The family is planning a memorial service for a later date at The Cypress in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
