Barbara H. Fanning, a resident of Southampton Village for more than 70 years, died on July 23, 2019, at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. She was 87.
Ms. Fanning was born in Greenport on July 13, 1932, to Theodore B. and Mary J. (Prince) Howard, and was considered a “Sterling Baby” for being born in Eastern Long Island Hospital. She was later educated at Greenport schools and the Southampton School of Nursing.
On November 21, 1953, she married Donald E. Fanning at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary R.C. Church in Southampton, and together they made their home in Southampton Village. For 42 years, she worked at Southampton Hospital as a registered nurse.
Ms. Fanning was a communicant of the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and a member of the New York State Nurses Association.
She loved her family, was a lover of nature, was famous for her apple pies, was a lover of our country, and loved the Village of Greenport, survivors said.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald E. Fanning, on April 15, 2016. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Thomas and husband Steve, Dona McKissick and husband Jim, Theresa Hunter and partner Brad Eleazer, and Erin Frankenbach and husband Jim; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Sunday, July 28, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Interment followed at the Southampton Cemetery.
