A special work session on an application for a change of zoning in Speonk—which would pave the way to build a 51-unit affordable housing apartment complex—will be held Thursday night, October 6, at 6 p.m. at the Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School.

The development of “Speonk Commons”—a six-building affordable housing apartment complex—would involve altering the zoning for nearly 4.3 acres on the west side of North Phillips Avenue, from its current mix of residential and business use to multifamily residential use.

The application is being pitched by Georgica Green Ventures LLC, a for-profit, Jericho-based company that builds affordable and workforce housing and has the support of the Southampton Housing Authority. Georgica Green Ventures would knock down existing homes on the property and construct a complex featuring studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, as well as retail space. Rents would range from as little as $930 a month for a studio to as much as $1,750 for a two-bedroom apartment, according to Southampton Town officials.

After listening to a presentation by land management officials at the September 22 Town Board work session, board members said they would like to have more information and feedback from community residents before allowing the application to advance to the environmental review stage.
