The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill is honoring 69 young artists for their outstanding work in the 2021 Student Exhibition. The award-winners were selected from more than 300 high school student participants by Neill Slaughter, painter and retired professor of visual art at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus. At a livestream presentation on Friday, April 16, from 6 to 7 p.m., education director Cara Conklin-Wingfield and Slaughter will honor the students with awards of excellence to 43 seniors, and “Ones to Watch” awards to 26 underclassmen.

“Given this extraordinary year of coping with the pandemic, many of these students were probably working at home and/or sporadically attending classes in school. In any case it is one more complication for these young artists,” Slaughter said. “I want to compliment not only the students’ efforts but also all the teachers who rose to the challenge admirably.”

“Artistic expression is a means of communication and the works on view serve to affirm the importance of art education this and every year,” Conklin-Wingfield said. “Despite significant adjustments to the day-to-day practice, the efforts of participating teachers this year demonstrate a deep commitment to art education, their students, and the community. We cannot thank them, and Neill, enough.”

Since 1956, the Parrish Art Museum has been showing the work of young artists from Eastern Long Island schools at the annual Student Exhibition, which provides an overview of the high level of creativity and accomplishment achieved in regional schools for generations. Students demonstrate imagination, enthusiasm, and technical skill in diverse media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, collage and textiles.

The 2021 Student Exhibition closes on Sunday, April 18. Recognizing that students may not be able to visit the exhibition this year with their classes, the Parrish developed a 360-degree immersive and visually engaging online tour. The tour, as well as a recorded guided video tour of the exhibition with Conklin-Wingfield, are available at parrishart.org to allow the entire community to experience this dynamic exhibition. The Parrish is at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill.
