Light Up The Harbor

On behalf of the Sag Harbor Historical Society, I would like to thank everyone for participating in our second annual “Light Up the Harbor” decorating initiative.

This all began last year, when the pandemic seemed to be casting a shadow on our holidays, and the Sag Harbor Historical Society wondered how we could shine some light on the holiday season and give folks a sense of hope. We decided to encourage everyone to “Light Up the Harbor” with a home decorating initiative — and we decided to continue it into this year as well.

There are so many beautiful homes and businesses decorated this year. The Madison Street business district looks amazing — the stores are beautiful, and so many homes are aglow. We are so lucky to be living in this most beautiful part of the world, especially during the holidays. Thank you to all: homes, businesses and even some boats that have given us a sense of joy and celebration.

In order to be considered for the contest, folks were asked to register their homes and send in photos to the Historical Society. This year, we are happy to announce four homes that are lighting up the harbor and have followed this protocol. Each homeowner recognized was given a commemorative ornament for their tree, a copy of the amazing book “Sag Harbor: The Story of an American Beauty” by Dorothy Ingersol Zaykowski, a yard sign, and a year-long membership to the Sag Harbor Historical Society.

If anyone out there is currently not a member, please consider becoming one. Your donations help support the very important work of the Historical Society: helping to keep the history of Sag Harbor alive.

The homes recognized this year include the home of Bonnie Lowe Wingate Jackson and Bill Porter on Payne Avenue, the home of Susan and David Denis on Sunset Beach Road, the home of Rosemary Mitchell on Grand Street, and the home of Debbie and Grover Papano on Division and Marsden streets.

We would like to congratulate everyone who participated in this year’s event, and for all of the homes and businesses that are lighting up our harbor. We also would like to thank Danny Mitchell from Goldberg’s Famous Bagels on Main Street for the lovely hot chocolate that he donated for our “Light Up the Harbor” celebration. Unfortunately, the Dickens Carolers were not able to attend in full, due to illness, but a grand day of music and community was had by all who attended.

Wishing you all a beautiful holiday and a most wonderful and healthy 2022.
